Ways to conserve water in the home
1. Take shorter showers
Taking a warm shower is therapeutic hence the temptation to stay in the bathroom for hours. Alternatively one can take a bath which will significantly reduce the amount of water used. This effect will be seen when you get fewer water bills. One can also consider changing their shower head with a water efficient showerhead. When brushing teeth, one should turn off the tap until they finish and are ready to rinse their mouth instead of letting the tap run as they are brushing. When washing one’s car, one can turn off the tap until they are ready to rinse the car to avoid letting the water run as they are still soaping the car. To clean the driveway, one can consider sweeping it or using a blower instead of using the hose.
3. Carrying out plumbing repairs quickly
Water leaks are known to significantly waste a considerable amount of water. For instance, a leaking tap may lose more water when left that way overnight. One should also ensure they close all taps tightly to ensure zero leakages. During spring one can check all hoses and faucets to ensure they are not leaking. In the case of a leak, one should ensure they are repaired completely before they worsen.
4. Watering your lawn
We all love our lawns to be green all the time hence the need to ensure they are well watered even if it is not raining. Lawn watering should be done early morning and late at night. This is important since the amount of evaporation is reduced significantly. In addition to that, one should water their lawn for a long time to ensure that it is deeply soaked. If the lawn is watered lightly, the water will evaporate easily and will also create a shallow root system which does no good to the lawn. One should also ensure that they do not sprinkle their lawn on a windy day so that the water is not blown away to the street or your neighbor’s yard.
5. Mulching trees and plants
One should also consider mulching their trees and flowerbeds to ensure the moisture is conserved. If one’s yard is sloppy, they should consider planting shrubs or trees instead of the lawn. This will help in catching the amount of water running down the slope during watering. The shrubs one should plant are the drought resistant ones which will help eliminate the need to keep watering them always.
6. Buying water appliances
When buying water appliances, one should ensure that they are water efficient appliances to help in water conservation. This includes the toilet water closet go for one with a smaller capacity but still works efficiently.
